This popular toy was invented by an accident while Richard James, a naval engineer was testing tension springs in a laboratory. After a spring dropped off a counter and seemed to "walk", he took it home to his wife and together they named it "Slinky" and the rest is toy history. They were introduced in 1945, and all doubts about the popularity of such a toy disappeared when they sold out the first 400 in 90 minutes.
