Klackers

These things were brought out in the late 1960's, and consisted of 2 glass or similar balls on a string that you would start "klacking" together until you built enough momentum to get them hitting on the bottom and top of the arc of travel. They began to disturb parents in a couple of ways...They were annoyingly loud and noisy, and as soon discovered by everybody they made a fine weapon and eventually would shatter into pieces, causing a serious risk for injury. Sure they were a little dangerous, but what isn't? They were later brought out as a new version on a plastic rod that kept them under control, but where's the fun in something your parent's approved of? Check back later for more Cool Old Junk...

I remember Klackers very well. I grew up in the UK and owned a set of Klackers in the early seventies. Although the balls on my set were not glass but appeared to be manufactured out of some material very similar to that used in snooker or pool balls. My friends and I would play for hours with them and I distinctly remember the part when you would miss and the balls would coming crashing down on your hands and wrists and I remember how much that hurt. But...we would laugh at ourselves and do it over and over again. I do remember they were eventually banned in the UK for the wrist breaks and fractures they apparently caused. However, I have never met anyone who was actually injured by them. For as much damage as they were supposed to have caused, in my experience they caused a lot less damage to me than riding, or should I say, falling off my bike did!
